15th & 16th Avenue Bridge Restoration

Owener: City of Minneapolis

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Description: Restoration of 2 concrete bridges buit in 1916 and designated historic in 2005, and part of an initiative called The Midtown Corridor Bridge Preservation Program. These bridges presently cross a linear park / bike path called The Midtown Greenway, but originally spanned a sunken trainway. These bridges had undergone both uniform and differential settlement, which led to large cracking in the abutment wall, back wall and wing walls. Exposed reinforcement steel, crumbling concrete, and accelerated deterioration of the bridges' key elements were shortening the bridges usable life and had become a safety issue. The scope of renovation included full and partial bridge deck repair, slope stabilization, wing wall repairs, repairing the sidewalk and railings, foundation stabilization, superstructure strengthening, and adding approach panels.
